Is Cruise Genie a travel agency?
No. Cruise Genie is a free referral service, part of Smart Traveler. We connect you with independent cruise specialists who quote and book your cruise. You cannot book on this site.
How do the specialists get paid? Will I pay extra fees?
There is no fee for the service. Travel agents are paid commission by the cruise lines and other travel suppliers, so in most cases the fare is the same as booking directly — and a specialist can often add value through group space, past-guest benefits or promotions you might miss.
Why not just book directly with the cruise line?
A line’s own reservation agents sell that one line. An independent specialist compares lines, ships and itineraries for you, helps with flights, hotels, insurance and documents, and is on your side before, during and after the trip if something goes wrong.
How are specialists chosen?
Requests go only to agents whose cruise-line and destination specialist designations have been verified — with the supplier where needed. An agent who receives a request for a Seabourn cruise or an Antarctic expedition must be verified in that area.
What should I think about before requesting a quote?
Where and roughly when you want to go, who is traveling (and their ages), the type of cabin you want, and a budget. The more you tell us, the better the match. If you have not decided, say so — helping you choose is part of the job.
Do I pay you up front?
No. Deposits and payments go directly to the cruise line or tour operator, charged by them. Deposit amounts and final-payment dates depend on the line, the fare and how far ahead you book.
What if a cruise line or travel supplier goes out of business?
It does happen. That is why Smart Traveler has required travel insurance on every cruise since 2002, from a highly rated third-party insurer — not only from the company selling the trip. If you already have an annual travel policy, tell your specialist.
What about passports and visas?
We cannot apply for passports or visas for you, but your specialist will tell you exactly what your itinerary requires and how to get it. A valid passport is strongly recommended on every international cruise.
Do you handle river cruises too?
Yes. River cruises go to specialists in river travel; you can also browse lines on the Official River Cruise Directory.
